If the Puget Sound area is to be the premier region for life science research and biotechnological innovation, the state has to increase incentives to at least match what other states are offering, according to recommendations presented Monday at the governor’s second annual Life Science Summit.

"We need to focus not only on quantity but on quality so that we have the kind of world-class education and research system that will keep this area competitive throughout the 21st century," Smith told the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce.

"The university has had a historic problem dealing with business and being collaborative,"

"We’re both on I-90, and we both benefit from through tourists," said Jonathan Coe, president of the Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce. "People coming from the west heading to national parks, or coming from the east going to Seattle might stop here."

Maintaining the state’s competitive edge will require overhauling public education, she said: "It’s the single most important investment we can make for the future of our state."

According to a feasibility report funded by the Governor’s Office, the process to create ethanol at the mill is not only possible, but the technology is available to make it probable.

“Businesses are what create new and better jobs, and they need to be supported so they can hire more employees and pay better wages.”
