Cancellation of Steve Running speech in Choteau, Montana sparks debate

Big Sky Pathways helps Montana students find careers

One part of this plan is to provide career planning tools and identify high-skill, high-wage, and high demand occupations to serve as guides for students and educators in planning these current or emerging occupational opportunities.

Canceling Steve Running speech to high school students in Choteau, MT by the Superintendent a close-minded decision. "Who needs that Globul Warming Guy? "

Running did deliver a speech in Choteau that day, and it was a familiar one to anyone who’s heard him speak in recent months. It’s about climate change, mostly, but it’s also about people’s irrational reactions to bad news.

We find that ironic, as well as the fact that St. John canceled Running’s second speech to avoid controversy. Far worse than the pressure Choteau escaped by bowing to its most close-minded community members is the national attention that’s now embarrassing the entire school district. (and Montana)

The company, based in Wichita Falls, Texas, specializes in energy conservation management for schools and promises to save the district at least $3.7 million in energy costs over five years.

Choteau School Board decision to cancel speech took away a unique opportunity to learn

Our school leaders seem to be under the impression that high school students are not able to hear about what some deem "controversial topics" and form individual judgments. This raises the question of what exactly public high school education is. Is it the spoon-feeding of information to America’s next generation or is it presenting this generation with all the facts and allowing students to decide how those facts are interpreted?

To the Choteau school board and some of the Choteau community I hope you realize that our school is probably one of the few districts in the nation to deny a Nobel Peace Prize winner the right to speak to its students.
