With a generous grant from the Sunshine Lady Foundation, students learned about the importance and the practice of philanthropy by disbursing grants to Missoula-area nonprofits that serve needs related to youth, education or health.

“To keep pace with leading nations, the U.S. needs to produce 64 million more undergraduate degrees by the year 2025 …. The U.S. is on track to produce about 48 million; that leaves a big gap,” Stearns said. “The only way we can address that as a country is to do it county-by-county and school-by-school. The way we, in the university system, feel that we can be a part of that is to work on a national agenda at the county level.”

"Every piece that is included is multilayered and used in very different ways to teach and to engage," he said. "Everything is multisensory."

Environmental engineering students at Tech earned accolades in the annual national Environmental Design Contest in Las Cruces, N.M. The competition held this month pushes students to develop the technology to deal with environmental problems.

MSU is linked to NASA as one of 14 members of the NASA Astrobiology Institute (NAI), a consortium of institutions that study the origins, evolution, distribution, and future of life in the universe.

“People should be demanding excellence from the schools and we should be providing it. I think for too long people just see schools with their hands out asking for money but not trying to do anything better. That’s not who we are in Missoula. We’re going to demand that we make ourselves better, and voters should demand that of us as well.” Superintendent Alex Apostle

To meet the budget shortfall, MCPS Business Services Director Pat McHugh says the district needs to secure multiple levies placed on next month’s school board ballot. Just to reach last year’s high school operating budget, for instance, McHugh says a $52,375 levy must pass.
