Education and retraining must move up on the U.S.’s priority list–with the public, academic, non-profit and business sectors all working together.

This story addresses “Earn It” strategies that western North Carolina residents, aided by the local nonprofit HandMade in America, are using to redesign their rural economy. They’re working to increase the income of the region’s many craftspeople, farmers and very small business owners by returning to their roots and developing their assets — crafts, agriculture and tourism.

ASTRA has created 51 state-specific R&D Sheets and K-12 STEM Ed Report cards to help illustrate the importance of scientific research to state and local economies, job growth, innovation, our standard of living, and national security.

The Center is a regional studies and public education program at The University of Montana located in the heart of the Rockies.

All developed countries began as undeveloped. The question then, is not why are some nations poor, but rather, why are some nations rich? Is it abundant natural resources, access to outside capital, geography, climate, or luck?

The analysis reinforces the idea that a focus on key traditional factors brings about better economic outcomes. Improving the quality of life for young educated professionals will stimulate economic development

Our initial focus is on aquaculture, automotive parts, biofuels, biotech; dairy foods, electronics, environmental management; food manufacturing; healthcare; information technology; marine engineering; telecommunications; textiles.
