Giovanni’s is the brainchild of culinary school student John Caruso, who designed the menu and built the business plan. Caruso created and helps staff the restaurant as part of his required internship for graduation.

“I feel like we don’t empower youth to do what they’re capable of doing—they’re capable of doing so much more than we ever give them credit for,” Hanson said. “Even as kids, they can change the world.”

Grant amounts range from $500 to $2,500 and will be awarded for use by UM students during 2010 Wintersession and spring and summer semesters.

According to the nomination, Karas “has insured FVCC’s success by forging strategic partnerships with local industries and other institutions of higher learning. The public’s confidence in her leadership led to the passage of a $16 million levy to double the size of the campus and dramatically increase its academic, technical and community education offerings.”

JMG is dedicated to helping young people graduate from high school and make successful transitions to postsecondary education, the military or meaningful employment. JMG underclassmen have a return to school rate of 95% statewide and a 94% return in schools serving Indian youth.

Florence Superintendent John McGee said MAP testing is a significant weapon in the effort to make classrooms a dynamic place where teachers can more nimbly address areas where students need a little extra work.
