Employees at five Montana papers ordered to take unpaid furloughs (What’s been your experience with your Lee Newspaper subscription?)

Lee Enterprises

Lee Enterprises announced in mid-February employees at all its newspapers nationwide would be required to take a total of two weeks of unpaid leave between now and the end of September. The company owns 77 daily papers in 26 states.

The furloughs will include employees at Lee papers in Butte, Billings, Hamilton, Helena, and Missoula.

Lee has struggled financially in recent years, including laying off roughly 10 percent of its staff in 2022.

We just got a renewal bill for the Missoulian for $254.99 which included $4.99 for a “Paper Notice Fee” whatever that is. My wife called the phone number and got an overseas call center operator. We’re both frustrated by the fact that sports are usually a day late, the comics are now a joke and most of the news can be found more currently in multiple other media. Usually takes us less than 4 minutes to read all of the very few pages of the paper each day. It’s also interesting that the news is almost completely identical in each of the papers from Butte, Billings, Hamilton, Helena, and Missoula. She asked if she could talk to someone in Missoula and was told that there was no one there.

She asked if we could move to Wed. and Sunday delivery as Wed. contains the grocery sales flyers and Sunday has expanded funnies and more info. She was informed that that would cost $300 a year. So not getting the paper 5 days a week would be more expensive. Guess we don’t fully understand economics…..

Sad to see a company sell destruct so completely. I’m sure others will rise to fill the void when Lee declares bankruptcy.
