American Prairie Condemns BLM Decision Revoking Bison Grazing Permits

“This decision abandons decades of consistent federal policy and extends far beyond American Prairie,” said Alison Fox, CEO of American Prairie. “By reversing decades of precedent, BLM is creating uncertainty for tribal buffalo restoration, conservation partnerships, and public lands grazing management nationwide. The agency’s action is arbitrary, shortsighted, and contrary to its own longstanding interpretation of federal grazing law.”

Bison need better treatment from Montana

Perhaps most alarming, this decision amounts to rulemaking by fiat. In order to reach the result demanded by the Gianforte administration, the BLM acted without meaningful consultation with either tribes or the public.

Viewpoint: Bison, bureaucrats and bad politics in Montana – American Prairie Reserve

The hypocrisy is blatant. If a private landowner can graze cattle on public land without risking permit loss, why should a neighbor who grazes bison be punished for doing the same thing, and more, for the public good?

Farmers (and Ranchers) are aging. Their kids don’t want to be in the family business. The American Prairie Reserve Is an Option in Northern Montana

For Montanan farmers and ranchers North of Fort Peck Lake, the implications extend beyond tradition and heritage to economic viability, recreational opportunities, public health, and community stability. Aging farming and ranchers with fewer successors could drive more land into consolidation under large agribusinesses, or, even worse, ownership by rich out of state entities that then close the properties to hunting and recreation in favor of “hobby ranches and private hunting reserves. The American Prairie is an excellent alternative.

American Prairie Challenges BLM’s Proposed Revocation of Bison Grazing Permits

The administration’s proposal sets a dangerous precedent on public land management, reversing longstanding practice. Tribes in multiple states have voiced strong opposition to the BLM’s proposed decision, citing unintended and negative consequences for tribal buffalo herds. According to COLT’s letter of protest, as the Proposed Decision is currently written, it is unlikely that any tribal government or tribal citizen buffalo herd would ever be eligible for BLM grazing leases.

Randy Gray: American Prairie — here are the facts on the ground

This decision is one of capricious overreach, violating equal protection and establishing a dangerous and destabilizing precedent. BLM lands are owned by ALL Americans, not just adjacent cattle ranchers.
