A new Netflix show exposes the harsh realities of living below the poverty line in America. Based on Stephanie Land’s memoir, “Maid” follows a young mother’s fight to escape an abusive relationship. The series has attracted a huge audience. Land speaks with Michel Martin about her journey.

After fleeing an abusive relationship, a young mother finds a job cleaning houses as she fights to provide for her child and build them a better future.

“This show is so authentic. It is real, it shows what it’s like to only have two bucks in your pocket and to live with that amount of insecurity. I wrote my book so people would feel less alone,” Land concluded.

It was even read and reviewed by President Barack Obama, who described it, in part, as “the description of the tightrope many families walk just to get by.”
