The new measure of “social networking” is how many coffee groups you belong to.

At the Storyteller and other businesses in Thermopolis, Wyoming, several different coffee groups meet each week. The table at the Storyteller is used each morning by a revolving group of women that includes retired teachers, Catholic ladies, a sewing group and yoga enthusiasts. Coffee groups with people of different ages are trumping social networking.   People are gathering to actually talk with each other with phones coming out only when someone can’t remember what that movie was or what’s the capital of…..  They’re even meeting at McDonald’s.  Try to meet someone new today.  Try it!  You’ll like it.

Other communities (why isn’t yours?)  are placing benches that say “Sit here if you’d like to have a conversation.” to encourage more civil discussions and combat loneliness.    Try and meet a new person this week.  Your life could be better for it.

Does your community have “Sit here if you’d like to have a conversation” benches?

One of the worst epidemics in our society is loneliness.   These benches are a very simple early stage way to address this and help people feel like they’re not alone.
