The MAPS Media Institute Receives $10,000 Grant and Honored with "Community Asset Award" – Makes "Change Happen" in February

February has been good to Montana’s MAPS Media Institute (MMI) http://mediarts.org . Early in the month, the Ravalli County based media arts program that ‘educates and creates jobs’ received a $10,000 grant from “The Change Happens Foundation” (http://www.changehappens.us).

A week later, at the Bitterroot Valley Chamber of Commerce annual banquet, MMI was honored with the “Community Asset Award’. The BVCC presented the hand-crafted plaque to MMI President, Peter Rosten.

“We’re very grateful to receive financial and community support for the work we do with Montana kids,” says Rosten. “I also turned 60 this month and got to meet our new Grandson for the first time – definitely a wonderful way to start the year.”

ABOUT ‘CHANGE HAPPENS’: Based in Holualoa, Hawaii, the Change Happens Foundation is a private family foundation committed to helping motivated groups with pioneering research and forward-thinking projects that benefit humanity. They fund the development and implementation of innovative technology and progressive ideas to generate a positive force for change in our world.

Says Mike Troxel, VP of Administration: “The Change Happens Foundation Board of Directors is pleased to present the MMI program this grant to train students in professional media production.”

The MAPS Media Institute (MMI) is an educational, youth-force training and community development media arts program that delivers an ROI in human and real capital. Founded in 2004 (formerly known as MAPS: Media Arts in the Public Schools), the program has been featured in “Fortune Small Business” & “American School Board Journal” magazines. In 2008, the program received the “Award of Excellence in Education” from the San Francisco based, Society for New Communications Research.

In September 2009, MMI is relocating from public schools to its own facility. Enrollment will be open to students from all six Ravalli County (pop. 44,000) high schools – and for the first time – adult participants.

Regarding this expansion, former State Superintendent of Schools and current Montana Secretary of State, Linda McCulloch says: “The MAPS program and MMI promote important life skills. The students that participate feel like they are making a difference in their communities…and they are.”

ABOUT THE ‘BVCC’: Located in Hamilton, Montana, the Bitterroot Valley Chamber of Commerce comprises 600 member businesses throughout Ravalli County and advocates economic vitality, quality of life and a competitive enterprise system.

“Mr. Rosten has demonstrated a sincere commitment to share his knowledge and professional skills with the youth of Ravalli County,” says Richard O’Brien, Executive Director, BVCC. “We are certain that the broader mission of MMI will yield many economic & social benefits in the future – not only for our youth and valley, but for the State of Montana as well.”
