City Club Missoula discusses new airport terminal – Missoula to Texas? New flight announcement expected next week

Big changes are happening at the Missoula International Airport. That was the topic at the City Club Missoula http://www.cityclubmissoula.com/ meeting Monday.

One change is a push to raise several hundred thousand dollars in revenue guarantees to attract new flights and airlines.

Cris Jensen, airport director, said most of that money comes from grants but also from donors.

The other big change at the airport is a multi-year expansion. Jensen said they plan to break ground in 2018.

City Club Missoula – Missoula Airport needs to grow to attract more airlines, flights, director says

Calling it the "front door to our community," Missoula International Airport director Cris Jensen laid out the pitch Monday for the new terminal being designed.

Back in 2000, Missoula had only four nonstop destinations; it’s now about to add a 13th, Jensen told a City Club Missoula http://www.cityclubmissoula.com/ crowd. And since that time, the airport has seen a 69 percent rise in the number of passengers, including an 8.6 percent bump over the past year — the most growth of any airport in the state.

To bring in more flights, and more airlines, the airport needs to grow as well, Jensen said.

Missoula to Texas? New flight announcement expected next week

"We need new air service because our community demands it, whether it’s your business or your pleasure," said Jensen, addressing City Club Missoula http://www.cityclubmissoula.com/ "We all want to experience the world, and we want the world to experience Missoula."

"Tourism is a major market in Missoula," Neilan said. "Out of the 12.4 million people who come into the state every year, 4.5 million actually come through Missoula. It’s a large number of people who actually do visit Missoula, so it’s one of our big industries."
