We’re still killing ourselves and each other. What’s wrong with this picture?

Traffic deaths are up 20% in the U.S. from a decade ago, from 32,744 in 2014 to an estimated 39,345 in 2024.
“This is not a global trend. The U.S. is an outlier.”
While vehicles are mandated to be safer and we keep passing laws to make travel safer, could it be that we have the wrong playbook for building roads that prioritize “efficient” vehicle travel over alternative modes such as trains, busses, biking and walking? If it saves even one life, why don’t all cars have some form of breathalyzer to prevent impaired driving? We must implement more of the autonomous vehicle technology to prevent reckless driving. America needs to emulate the successful focus on health and safety seen in much of the developed world.
