City Club Missoula discusses energy prices

A spokesperson for NorthWestern Energy says the company has the goal of being completely green by 2050 and is weighing the use of nuclear power.

“The first 60% of that green energy future was pretty easy — we had hydro, we brought on a lot of wind, those sorts of things. That other final 40% is going to be a little difficult, and it’s going to take a little bit of time,” said Rick Edwards, NorthWestern Energy director of community connections.

Edwards says the company provides the 11th lowest rate in the country, at 12 cents per kilowatt hour. He compared the rate to states that adopted stricter clean energy policies like California, whose rates are 42 cents per kilowatt hour on average.

A representative with the Montana Renewable Energy Association says the availability of state solar installers and customers has seen a large increase over the last 20 years.
