The Wyoming Hathaway Scholarship Program Seeks to Keep the Best and the Brightest Close to Home.

Amber Lebsock is the kind of student who makes University of Wyoming recruiters salivate.

The university is increasingly going after students like Lebsock, both to raise the profile of the university and to slow the leakage of bright students from the state, UW officials said.

Its new weapon in the recruiting war is a substantial increase in big-ticket scholarships to resident high school graduates with stellar marks — the result of comprehensive financial aid restructuring in the wake of the state-sponsored Hathaway Scholarship Program.

The Hathaway Program is expected to generate at least $16 million a year for scholarships — most of it reserved for merit-based aid for UW and community college students from Wyoming.

Community colleges are also offering more

Casper College is hoping to attract more students by offering additional money on top of the state Hathaway Scholarship.

This week the college announced the Hathaway Plus program, where students can earn an additional $250 to $1,000 a semester, depending on which of the four Hathaway scholarships they get. That means more money to pay for tuition and fees, books and living expenses.
