Montanans can participate in upcoming rural health conference

Montanans interested in rural health issues can participate in two conferences designed for a wide range of rural health care advocates scheduled March 24-26 in Spokane, WA.

Sharon Kott, program coordinator for the Montana Area Health Education Center at Montana State University-Bozeman and one of the event’s planners, said the meetings would be particularly useful for community leaders, administrators, hospital board members, commissioners, providers, policy makers, public health professionals, medical librarians. Featured speakers include Katherine Ann Campbell, CEO of Mountainview Medical Center in White Sulphur Springs and Debra Powell-Taylor, a diabetes educator from Browning.

The first meeting will be March 24 and is titled "Regional Critical Access Hospital Conference: Tools for Success." It will be at the Red Lion Hotel at the Park in downtown Spokane. It will begin at 8:30 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m. Registration is required and costs $25.

The second conference, scheduled March 25-26, is the 17th Annual Northwest Regional Rural Health Conference. It also will be at the Red Lion in Spokane.

The program, "Challenged to Respond," is designed to bring together healthcare colleagues to learn more about how communities are addressing issues such as continued workforce shortages, cultural competency in an increasingly diverse world, responding to financial crisis, emergency preparedness and collaborative planning.

The regional rural health conference is presented by the Washington Rural Health Association and the Washington statewide Office of Rural Health including the Eastern Washington Area Health Education Center, Washington State University Extension; Office of Community and Rural Health, Washington State Dept. of Health; University of Washington School of Medicine; Washington State University; and the Western Washington Area Health Education Center.
