The Montana Campus Compact http://www.mtcompact.org/ is proud to launch the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Partnership Award for Campus-Community Collaboration. The Award honors and recognizes exemplary collaborations, undertaken by a Montana college or university in partnership with a community group (nonprofit, government agency, individuals), which address critical areas of public need.

These areas include literacy, quality housing, safe and clean environment, adequate food, youth mentoring, and access to healthcare. The Carter Partnership Award highlights exceptional partnerships that have worked to improve lives and communities in Montana as well as encourages the creation of more quality partnerships. Award recipients receive $10,000 in support of their project along with a handsome trophy from the Carter Center. The award is to be shared by both the winning campus and the community partner.

The Carter Partnership Award is named for President Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter as a tribute to their lifelong efforts to build and strengthen safe, healthy and caring communities throughout the world. The award was created in Georgia with the generous support of the Annie E. Casey Foundation and Georgia State University. The Montana Campus Compact was chosen among several national applicants to replicate and host the award in Montana.

A selection committee composed of representatives from higher education, business, faith-based, nonprofit, and government agencies is reviewing applications through March 2004. A winning project and two finalist projects will be honored.

Tickets and tables are available for the ceremony set for Friday, 21 May 2004 at 6:00PM at the Caras Park Pavilion in Missoula. The Honorable Andrew Young, civil rights activist, former mayor of Atlanta, and former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations will be the featured speaker. For information on attending or supporting the event, please contact The Montana Campus Compact Carter Partnership Award at http://www.mtcompact.org or call 243-5177 x7.

The Montana Campus Compact is a statewide non-profit coalition of 17 college presidents and chancellors committed to helping students develop the values and skills of citizenship through civic engagement and participation in public service. It is the only statewide higher education organization whose primary purpose is to support campus-based service. By creating a supportive environment for involvement in community public service, these academic leaders believe that their institutions can best prepare the next generation of informed, active, committed citizen leaders for Montana.
