Montana Tech partners on $1 million sustainable cement research project

Montana Tech

Montana Technological University has received more than $1 million through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers–funded ACERS project, a multi-institutional collaboration with the University of California–Irvine and Solvus Global to develop more sustainable alternatives to traditional cement. Montana Tech researchers are exploring the use of regional waste materials in concrete to maintain strength while reducing landfill waste and greenhouse gas emissions, and the university plans to acquire a large-scale 3D concrete printer by spring 2026 to test new cement mixes and construction methods. Project leaders say the technology could play a key role in building resilient infrastructure, particularly in post-disaster and wildfire-prone areas.
