Montana Governor Schweitzer mandates 35% cut in travel expenses

Tighter budgets have grounded at least some state government employees’ trips to out-of-state conferences and training sessions this year.

Gov. Brian Schweitzer has ordered agencies under his control to chop by 35 percent their out-of-state travel expenses paid out of the state’s general fund for the budget year that began July 1.

It could save nearly $350,000 this year based on the previous year’s out-of-state travel spending , the Lee Newspapers State Bureau estimates. That would be out of a total general-fund budget that tops $1.8 billion annually.
