Montana Department of Commerce Investment Targets Downtown Revitalization Across 11 Montana Communities

The Montana Department of Commerce has awarded $600,000 in Montana Main Street Program grant funding to 11 communities, directing new investment into downtown infrastructure, historic preservation, and community gathering spaces across the state. This funding matters to Montana residents because it supports the economic and civic health of small towns and regional hubs that serve as anchors for local commerce, tourism, and public life. The grants impact communities from Havre and Lewistown to Roundup and Winnett, helping local governments, small businesses, and nonprofit partners move forward projects that strengthen Main Street corridors, preserve historic assets, and improve quality of life. For many rural towns, even modest capital investments can have outsized effects by attracting visitors, supporting local entrepreneurs, and stabilizing tax bases that fund schools and essential services.
The funded projects range from downtown master planning and wayfinding systems to courthouse restoration, trail renovation, and public space improvements, all designed to spur long term economic activity and community pride. These efforts also support broader Montana economic trends by reinforcing place based development, encouraging small business growth, and creating environments that help communities retain workers and families.
In some cases, investments tied to schools, cultural facilities, and public spaces intersect with Montana’s education and workforce pipeline by improving shared community assets that serve students and residents alike. With 38 Montana Main Street communities statewide, the program continues to act as seed funding for locally driven development, leveraging state dollars to protect Montana’s historic downtowns while positioning them for sustainable economic futures.
