Missoula Marathon Has A Record $5.26 Million Economic Impact On The Community

Missoula Marathon participants and organizers, alongside Destination Missoula, reported a 20% increase in participants compared to 2025, driving this surge in visitor spending. This growth underscores the event’s expanding role as a vital economic engine for the city.
The full marathon sold out, with hotel occupancy reaching near or full capacity, leaving fewer than 100 rooms available citywide during the marathon weekend in late June 2026. Destination Missoula calculated the economic impact using a Tourism Economics model, focusing on out-of-town visitor spending at restaurants, retail stores, transportation, and lodging. Local businesses also benefited from increased activity and tips. Race director Trisha Drobeck noted the previous year’s impact was just over $4 million and emphasized the potential for even greater figures when including local spending.
Plans are underway to tailor marketing strategies for the 2027 race, concentrating efforts on Western Montana and the Missoula Valley.
For Montana businesses, this marathon’s growth could signal increasing opportunities tied to tourism-driven events, particularly in lodging and retail sectors. The region’s natural appeal and community engagement might amplify such economic benefits, encouraging further investment in event infrastructure and localized marketing campaigns.
