The event begins Monday, June 21 at 8:30 a.m. at the Continuing Education building at the University of Montana.

“Building Blocks of Excellence” will feature two nationally recognized experts in gifted education.

Rachel McAnallen, an educator of more than 40 years of students from kindergarten to college, will deliver a presentation on connecting young people with mathematics. McAnallen is author of “Action Fractions” and numerous articles on mathematics. She specializes in turning learners of all ages on to the wonderful world of mathematics, said Kathie Bailey, conference co-coordinator and AGATE member.

Eric Chudler, a neuroscientist at the University of Washington dubbed “the Brain Man”, devotes his time to promoting interest and understanding of the brain among youngsters. He’ll present the latest research breakthroughs on the brain and practical classroom strategies using the research. He is the founder of the Neuroscience for Kids Web site.

State presenters include Ruth Carlstrom, a Great Falls gifted and talented teacher; Tamara Fisher, a Polson gifted and talented teacher; and the Montana Art Alliance Organization which will present 90 minute sessions in drama, dance, visual arts and music. State presenters will give mini-presentations each afternoon from 2:45 to 4:15 p.m.

Bailey said the organization still has scholarships available for teachers interested in attending. The funds would cover the $300 registration fee. Full-time college students may attend the entire conference for $50. Parents may hear the keynote speakers for a $10 fee.

For each teacher that a school district sends, AGATE will guarantee a scholarship to a second teacher in that district. The scholarship covers registration fee.

Educators who attend may receive two graduate or undergraduate credits for an additional fee of $115. Credit may be used toward earning a special competency endorsement in gifted education as well as for the district pay schedule upgrades and renewal of teaching certificates.

Deadline for registration is Friday. Check-in will be held Sunday, June 20, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the foyer of the Continuing Education Building. Registration packets can also be picked up Monday, June 21, at 8:30 a.m.
