Hathaway Scholarship, created out of the state’s budget surplus in an effort to create a larger and more educated work force in Wyoming.

More than 900 students in the University of Wyoming’s freshman class will be there with the help of the Hathaway Scholarship, the university said Thursday.

The scholarship is the reason for almost all of a 16 percent increase in freshmen enrollment, said Noah Buckley, interim director of admissions.

The students will receive a total of $2.4 million in merit and need-based aid. This is the first class to receive the Hathaway Scholarship, created out of the state’s budget surplus in an effort to create a larger and more educated work force in Wyoming.

After a steady decline in UW enrollment throughout the 1990s, recently the university’s Outreach School has helped boost enrollment back over the 13,000 mark, and now it appears the Hathaway Scholarship will continue the university’s growth into the future.
