Great Falls Montana’s University of Providence to Close in Great Falls by 2027

The University of Providence in Great Falls will close by August 2027 after losing an $8 million annual lifeline.

This decision, announced Tuesday, follows the Providence health system’s withdrawal of financial support amid its own fiscal pressures. The closure marks a significant structural shift for higher education in Great Falls, reflecting the fragility of small private universities reliant on major benefactors.

Founded in 1932 and evolving from a two-year teacher’s college to a liberal arts university, the school has operated at a deficit for years. Despite declaring financial exigency in December 2025 and implementing a restructuring plan with program, staff, and faculty cuts, the university exhausted all viable paths forward. The Providence health system’s 2025 announcement to end support by the close of 2027 was the final blow. The institution serves 630 students, with 397 on campus, supported by over 200 faculty and staff. Meetings about compensation and benefits for employees begin this week.

The university will assist enrolled students in completing or transferring their degrees before the campus closes.

Montana’s wide-open spaces and dispersed population often make sustaining private, tuition-dependent universities challenging. The University of Providence’s closure may underscore how regional economic shifts and donor reliance can leave local higher education vulnerable, particularly in cities like Great Falls that rely on such institutions for cultural and economic vitality.
