An aging population and migration rank among the biggest hurdles facing Montana’s workforce and economy, according to Patrick Barkey, director of the Bureau of Business and Economic Research at the University of Montana.“An emerging technology industry is tempering declines in other economic sectors, such as agriculture and mining,” he said. “But with an aging and retiring workforce, the state faces challenges in recruiting and training qualified young workers.”
