First-of-its-kind fund aims to promote conservation through virtual fencing

Across the Western U.S., fencing spans more than 600,000 miles, but that fencing can be detrimental to local wildlife populations.

In Bozeman, the Property and Environment Research Center, a nonprofit organization, is debuting the first-of-its-kind fund to help ranchers implement new technology on their land in an effort to reduce physical fences.

That technology is virtual fencing, and the group allocated $250,000 to be dispersed to eligible applicants including ranchers, landowners and conservation groups to put it into effect on their property.
