EVs can now get a charge as they drive over this Detroit street

Detroit has unveiled the nation’s first public electric-vehicle–charging roadway, transforming a quarter mile of 14th Street into a wireless charging system that powers compatible EVs as they drive. Copper coils embedded beneath the pavement transfer energy to vehicles equipped with special receiver plates, delivering up to about 15–16 kW without requiring drivers to stop. While currently limited to specially outfitted vehicles, the project signals a future in which strategic corridors such as bus routes, freight lanes, and highway ramps could continuously recharge EVs, enabling smaller, lighter, and less expensive batteries and making long-distance electric driving easier and more efficient.
