College Shuts Down 20 Parties As Officials Say Reopening Is ‘Recipe For Disaster’

Party

At least 20 were shut down, most between 25 and 50 attendees, for violating state coronavirus orders banning large gatherings.

Health experts have identified young people as driving the virus’s continued spread in parts of the country. Young, college-aged people can be infected with coronavirus, but are less likely to show symptoms, making it easy to unknowingly spread the virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has also warned against the specific challenges of dorms, which like cruise ships or nursing homes, are “congregate settings” that create high risk for viral transmission.

I’m encouraged by all of the steps that our educators and administrators are taking to ensure covid free environments for our future leaders when they return to school but I’m greatly concerned about what these students are doing now and will be doing when they’re not in class.

We live in Missoula’s University District about 3 blocks from the University of Montana campus. Over the last several weeks we’ve seen and heard numerous obvious parties. This weekend my daughter observed 10 university aged young women entering a local home with not a single one of them wearing a mask. The parties are lasting well after midnight and, as parties will be, get louder with more participants and more festive as the night proceeds. With no regulations or oversight in place, I assume that this activity is being repeated in other communities. I do admire LA Mayor Garcetti who has ordered utility cut offs for those homes that host large gatherings.

I don’t know of any efforts to engage these students and educate them as to masks, distancing and large gatherings. I’m afraid that, as students come to Montana to attend school, we’re going to see a Covid surge in those communities with colleges which can only put more people in jeopardy.

I realize that opening schools is important but all of the efforts in the world are not going to be effective if students ignore safe procedures when they’re not in school.
