Climate Change Quadruples Snow Drought Risk in Western U.S. – Montana State University Researchers

Researchers including those from Montana State University and the National Center for Atmospheric Research investigated last winter’s extreme snow drought, attributing it to anthropogenic warming. This finding marks a significant structural shift in understanding how climate change increasingly influences regional water resources.
The team employed high-resolution climate datasets and models, comparing recent winters to preindustrial conditions dating back to 1850. They found the likelihood of snow droughts has risen from once every 30 years to roughly every 6.8 years in today’s climate, with the Upper Colorado River Basin experiencing a fourteenfold increase. Data processing was conducted using a supercomputer in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Snow droughts reduce critical water supplies by shortening snowpack duration; for example, the south end of Fremont Lake was ice-free by February 1, 2026.
Researchers hope land managers will use these insights to plan for continued warming and explore emission reductions to lessen future drought frequency.
Montana’s terrain and reliance on snowpack for water could make these findings particularly relevant. If warming trends persist, Montana businesses dependent on water resources might potentially face increased operational challenges, prompting a need for adaptive strategies tailored to evolving climate conditions.
