City of Bozeman taking steps to make intersections safer through compliance enforcement instead of roundabouts.

The City of Bozeman has established clear visibility standards at intersections to improve driver safety by regulating vegetation height and placement. This structural shift aims to reduce accidents caused by obstructed sight lines where drivers must creep forward to see oncoming traffic.

Property owners must keep plants below 30 inches and tree branches at least 10 feet above the road, with code compliance officers responding to violations and working collaboratively to ensure adherence. Benjamin Bailey, Neighborhood Service and Code Compliance Manager, reports the city has achieved an 88% compliance rate for cases related to these guidelines, which are enforced at intersections such as North Grand and Tamarack, and Peach and North Wilson. Property owner Tracy Thomas emphasized the importance of clear sight lines to prevent accidents.

Property owners are encouraged to maintain these standards, and residents can contact the city’s Neighborhood Services and Code Compliance Division for questions.

Ben Bailey | Neighborhood Services and Code Compliance Program Manager was kind enough to let me know that while roundabouts are an option, current costs and regulations make them difficult. I explained that they don’t have to be over-engineered to be efficient. Missoula has many that are being used every day with great success. I do hope Bozeman will take a page from the Missoula playbook and re-consider. Easier for the city through less code enforcement and safer than stop signs and traffic lights.
