What’s Really at Stake

Missoula residents now recognize the sickly red color of evergreen trees killed by mountain pine beetles. What we don’t see is the enormous scope of the damage. Mountain pine beetles used to be kept in check by very cold winters. As the climate warms, that is no longer happening, and the beetles now stretch from Arizona to Alaska, pushing farther into Canada than ever before. British Columbia alone has lost millions of trees across an area the size of Wisconsin in an outbreak by far the most extensive recorded.
What will this mean for the future habitability of the Earth? Prof. Diana Six is uniquely qualified to talk on the subject. She is Professor of Forest Entomology and Pathology in the Department of Ecosystem and Conservation Sciences at UM and has conducted extensive research in this area, including collaborations with scientists in the United States, South Africa, Europe, Mexico and Canada.
