Brixtel Defense Evaporates From Glendive, Montana After Promising Jobs and Investment

Brixtel Defense promised a $125 million investment and 350 jobs in Glendive but left within two years.

The company, which opened a facility in Glendive, Montana, in January 2024, abruptly terminated employees and vacated the site by early 2026. This departure leaves the community with unfulfilled economic development promises and questions about local industry efforts.

Brixtel initially planned to establish a major ammunition manufacturing presence near the North Dakota border, employing around four workers by spring 2024 and projecting hundreds more jobs by 2028. Despite receiving $9,000 from the State Trade Expansion Program and support from Montana’s Department of Commerce, Brixtel failed to maintain good standing in 2025 before reinstating it in 2026. The Glendive Economic Development Council, once instrumental in attracting the company, dissolved in 2025, passing local economic stewardship to a regional corporation. Former employees and local officials describe the situation as a “short-lived dream,” with no public explanation for the withdrawal.

With no clear timeline for new developments, the community faces uncertainty about the facility’s future.

Montana’s experience with Brixtel highlights risks inherent in attracting large-scale investments to small, rural towns. The state’s vast geography and dispersed population might complicate sustaining industrial projects dependent on steady market conditions, especially in sectors like ammunition manufacturing that have seen boom and bust cycles. Given these dynamics, other Montana communities may approach similar economic prospects with heightened caution.
