Amazon Plans Drone Delivery in 500 U.S. Cities by 2026

Amazon aims to extend Prime Air drone deliveries to nearly 500 U.S. cities by 2026.
The company announced plans to dramatically expand its drone delivery service, signaling a structural shift in last-mile logistics. This rollout depends on evolving Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) rules that would ease operational constraints for certified drone operators.
Prime Air currently operates from 11 metro-area sites, including Phoenix, Detroit, and Houston, with imminent launches in Chicago, Cleveland, Atlanta, Boise, and Syracuse. The FAA has proposed regulations allowing drones to fly beyond visual line of sight, which could lower costs and accelerate expansion. Drones deliver items up to five pounds within about 30 minutes, using onboard cameras and sensors for navigation under FAA Part 135 certification. Prime members receive free delivery on orders over $50, while others pay up to $4.99. Each delivery produces roughly 30 seconds of noise during drop-off.
Additional community launches are expected later this year, contributing to the nationwide target by the end of 2026.
Montana businesses could monitor these developments cautiously, as expanded drone delivery may influence supply chain dynamics in rural and urban areas alike. Given Montana’s expansive geography and dispersed population, regulatory shifts enabling beyond-line-of-sight operations might be particularly significant for local logistics and service accessibility.
