New “Town” of 5600 Workers For Data Center Development Will Be Larger Than Many Wyoming Communities

A proposed man camp near Cheyenne would house 5,600 workers, surpassing 84 Wyoming towns in size.

Laramie County and Cheyenne officials, along with developer Iron Guard Housing, have submitted plans for an 800-unit camp to accommodate workers for large infrastructure projects. This development reflects growing housing needs driven by rapid growth in the AI and data center sectors.

The camp would occupy incorporated county land south of Cheyenne, adjacent to the Meta data center under construction in the High Plains Business Park. Notices were sent to over 200 nearby landowners, eliciting concerns over safety, traffic, utilities, and property values. The project is intended to address pressure on Cheyenne’s tight lodging market, where hotels are reportedly full and revenue has increased by 10 to 15 percent due to incoming workers. Officials are exploring city-county collaboration and zoning changes related to this housing proposal. A public hearing before the Laramie County Planning Commission is scheduled for Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

Montana businesses might observe parallels in housing pressures as infrastructure projects expand regionally. If similar workforce influxes occur, Montana communities could face comparable challenges in balancing rapid population growth, infrastructure capacity, and local concerns over safety and property impacts.
