Alzheimer’s symptoms reverse after US woman takes mushrooms.

A Japanese-American woman in her 80s showed temporary cognitive improvement after psilocybin mushroom treatment.

A recent case study reported that after receiving doses of psilocybin-containing mushrooms, the woman with advanced Alzheimer’s disease exhibited improved alertness, memory recall, and motor function. While this single case has sparked scientific interest, it does not establish that psychedelics can reverse Alzheimer’s disease.

The woman, experiencing severe decline for five years within a decade-long progression, received 5 grams of mushrooms initially, followed by 3 grams one month later. After treatment, she demonstrated spontaneous speech, better recognition of family members, increased independence, and regained urinary continence. Observations were based on caregiver reports without standardized cognitive testing or biomarker confirmation. The report, published in Frontiers in Neuroscience and authored by Rahul Sidhu, emphasizes that these findings are preliminary and that psilocybin’s role remains unproven. Ongoing research at the University of California, Berkeley, is examining psilocybin’s effects on cognitively healthy adults aged 60 to 85.

Aging populations in various regions, including Montana, might have an interest in neurodegenerative disease treatments. If future studies confirm benefits, rural communities could potentially face unique challenges and opportunities related to healthcare access, regulation, and wellness innovation in neurodegenerative care.
