Export Explosion in Idaho
Weak dollar spurs global demand for Idaho goods
North Idaho companies are joining the rest of the state in reaping the benefits of increased trade with other countries.
Foreign trade statistics compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau put the value of Idaho exports from January through June at more than $1.5 billion, the first time exports have exceeded that amount during the first six months of a year and $115 million over the total for January-June of 2004.
"International trade continues to offer Idaho a major avenue for economic expansion," Commerce & Labor director Roger B. Madsen said. "Every dollar the Legislature earmarks for international trade and every day Gov. Kempthorne promotes Idaho overseas pays significant dividends."
Exports of Idaho products to international markets are continuing at a record pace for the first six months of 2005 despite a slight decline in the second quarter amid lower prices for computer chips.
