Beautify Butte, Montana a proud Mining City tradition, gets going again
May 20, 2018 /
Charles Hauswirth, the beloved four-term mayor who helped Butte weather the Great Depression, announced in his self-published journal The Eye Opener ("Not a Cocktail, but a Stimulant," the paper’s flag proclaimed) on April 16, 1937, that the "Campaign on Dirt Is Under Way."
The mayor announced that the "City Fire Siren will give signal for merchants and business firms to scrub sidewalk in front of their establishments."
Some 81 years later, the campaign on dirt is underway again.
