How I Became a Better Father Later in Life

As I’ve grown older, my relationship with my three adult daughters has changed dramatically.

While I was serving in Congress for 26 years, I didn’t really have enough time for my children though I did try to attend as many school plays, football games (two of them played in the band at half-time) track meets and other events as possible. Also, I took them on some fun trips related to my job as Chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee(DCCC) like our annual fundraiser at the Super Bowl and our annual ski trip to Aspen. However, it never was enough.

Somehow they made it into adulthood with a decent relationship with dear old dad. That relationship has matured as they each started families of their own. The total of grandchildren now equals eight–seven girls and one boy. The grandkids-spread out across the country-have brought real joy into my life and, I believe, deepened the relationship I now enjoy with my three girls.
