Montana gas lines better than aging eastern system

A recent investigation by USA Today and affiliated media outlets across the country found that tens of thousands of miles of natural gas pipelines in the United States are antiquated, decaying and present a substantial risk for leaks and possible explosions.

Among other things, the Sept. 24 report found that at least 85,000 miles of antiquated cast-iron and bare-steel gas pipes are still operating in the country, despite warnings from federal safety officials that they’re prone to failure and need replacing.

However, Montana officials said that’s not the case here as virtually no cast-iron gas lines exist in the state, and around 30 percent of the state’s existing gas-line infrastructure was built prior to 1970.

Over the last three years, NorthWestern Energy http://www.northwesternenergy.com/has spent about $18 million to improve the safety along its gas-line distribution system.
