Structural issues hurt U.S. math education; teacher training, support lag behind other countries

America’s math instruction is inferior to many other countries, but the blame rests with the structure of the U.S. education system, several experts say.
"There’s lots of ways in which teachers in other countries are set up to succeed, and here there’s lots of barriers," said Deborah Ball, dean of University of Michigan’s School of Education and a leader in math-education reform.
