VCs Look for Entrepreneurs. Prominent venture capital executives want the right stuff in a startup.

Venture capitalists are looking for entrepreneurs with the right stuff to lead companies.

VC firm leaders talked about the qualities they look for in startups and management at the Red Herring East 2006 conference in Cambridge, Massachusetts on Tuesday.

“People clearly have to be willing to take risks,” said Dixon Doll, managing general partner of DCM Doll Capital Management. “Most entrepreneurs we back are fairly self-assured. Some people might say they’re arrogant, but I don’t think arrogance is a virtue. The CEO needs to personally own the numbers, know how they work, and convey them to potential investors.”

He wants managers to have their own vision for the company. He likes to get “crisp answers” from them about how they see their company. “Entrepreneurs supply the vision, not the VCs,” he said.
