Will the Rush to Health IT Create Talent Shortage? Montana Tech is one of the few institutions in the nation at the leading edge of Health IT Education at the undergraduate level.

As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the federal government is funding numerous new technical assistance centers to help doctors and hospitals deploy e-medical records systems. That should fill some support needs. But won’t many doctors require more hand-holding and won’t most hospitals need tech people working closely with clinicians on-site? Where will all this talent come from?

Thanks to Ray Rogers of the Butte, Montana based National Center for Health Care Informatics http://www.nchci.org/ for the following:

"Here is another article that speaks to the same issue. This is particularly pertinent to the National Center for Health Care Informatics (NCHCI), located on the Montana Tech campus, as well as Montana Tech and its degree program in Health Care Informatics. The NCHCI is taking a leadership role nationally on this issue.

Increased spending to drive healthcare IT job market http://matr.net/article-35733.html

"The American Reinvestment and Recovery Act has dedicated approximately $19 billion toward health information technology. The result will be a large number of jobs for individuals trained in the area of health information technology. As you know, Montana Tech is one of the few institutions in the nation at the leading edge of Health IT Education at the undergraduate level.

Additionally, I will be in DC on September 22 to co-chair the National Health IT Workforce Summit where we will bring together some of the nation’s experts in health IT and health IT workforce development to discuss the future supply and demand for health IT professionals. Bill Hersh (the subject of the linked article) is one of the summit participants. Montana Tech will certainly be front and center at this Summit as one of the nation’s leaders in health IT education.

We hope this funding will open some doors for the NCHCI and Montana Tech.

My best!

Ray"
