Digital Town Squares Drive Economic Development

Without high-speed connectivity, communities can’t hope to compete in the knowledge economy or provide smart-city services to their citizens. But connectivity alone doesn’t guarantee success. Communities must take proactive steps to leverage that connectivity. A combination of enabling technologies, organization, and dedicated local effort is needed for cities to become truly “smart communities.”

US Ignite, a nonprofit organization the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the National Science Foundation launched in 2012, runs several initiatives that help accelerate the smart-community movement and guide communities into the connected future. One of these, the Smart Gigabit Communities project, is a network of more than two dozen communities developing applications and services to address smart-city and IoT challenges. All these communities already have at least some access to gigabit broadband; now they are using that capacity to encourage economic innovation and better delivery of public services.

Shifting Landscape For Local EconomiesGlobally, communities are facing unprecedented unemployment and struggling through stay-at-home orders resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizations across government sectors are working to maintain or increase their service outputs in a virtual landscape, the nonprofit sector is struggling to respond to the increase of clients in need of support with decreases in charitable donations, and the private sector is working rapidly to compete in new ways for fewer consumers.

US Ignite Announced Project OVERCOME to Grow Broadband Access

Project OVERCOME, led by US Ignite and funded by the National Science Foundation, will select five proof-of-concept projects to grow access to broadband connectivity in underserved or unserved areas.

The project teams will be selected based on their use of innovation and technology, particularly in areas like forging public-private partnerships or exploring tech solutions like mesh networks. The participants of Project OVERCOME will be chosen in spring 2021, with proof-of-concept projects to be delivered within a year.

I absolutely agree that 25/3 is an outdated target made especially true in the pandemic.   You may be interested in a study commissioned by the Schools, Health, and Libraries Broadband Coalition about the cost of bringing fiber to community anchors in the US:   The cost of deploying high-speed, fiber optic broadband to community anchor institutions. . 

It’s a big number but it gives us a target.

Gigabit internet is the next generation of broadband internet service which is typically delivered over fiber optic lines and provides speeds of 1,000Mbps, which is also referred to as “1 Gbps” or “Gigabit” internet.
One gig internet runs at 940 Mbps, downloading data at a rate of 112.06 MB/second. At this speed you can download a 500 MB video conference in approximately 4 seconds. With fiberoptic internet, upload speeds increase up to 840 Mbps, freeing up bandwidth. 1 gig can support up to 100 workers without lag.
First of all, gigabit Internet isn’t worth it if your home network is slower than a gigabit. Upgrading your LAN to gigabit will involve getting a gigabit-capable router, assuming your service doesn’t provide one, and possibly a switch if you don’t have enough ports on the router for all your devices.
