Why national park advocates are not thrilled at increased visitor spending
September 27, 2025/

National park sites across the country would see partial or complete closures if the government fails to compromise on a spending package by Oct. 1, the National Parks Conservation Association said in a press release Tuesday. This could result in losses of up to $77 million a day from local gateway communities and $1 million a day from parks.
“A shutdown would furlough thousands of staff, drain millions in revenue from communities that rely on park tourism, jeopardize the protection of historic and natural resources, and upend plans for countless visitors,” NPCA president Theresa Pierno said in the press release.
