University of Montana’s College of Business Helps Grow Northwest Montana’s Entertainment Economy to a Near $300 Million Impact

Northwest Montana’s entertainment economy is nearing a $300 million impact, driven by local venues and education.
University of Montana’s College of Business, led by Dean Suzanne Tilleman, is expanding its Entertainment, Events and Sports Management major to support the region’s growing industry. This development represents a structural shift in workforce training aligned with a vibrant local entertainment economy.
The region benefits from a robust network of venues such as Scout and Gather Grounds and Depot Park, which provide year-round live music beyond large festivals. The university’s program, entering its second year since expanding from a 25-year certificate to a full business major, has doubled enrollment. Students gain practical experience through active collaboration with industry leaders and local events. Montana’s entertainment economy has grown from $233 million in 2003 to an estimated $300 million today, supporting thousands of jobs and generating significant tax revenue.
The University of Montana plans to continue scaling this program and partnering with hospitality sectors across the state.
Given Montana’s dispersed population and rugged geography, expanding local entertainment with skilled professionals may enhance community cohesion and economic resilience in Northwest Montana and similar regions. This growth could also encourage longer visitor stays, benefiting hospitality and retail businesses statewide.
