University of Montana Launches First Human-Centered AI Career Certificate

The University of Montana launched Montana’s first Human-Centered AI Career Certificate in 2026.
This new nine-credit program is designed to equip students with critical skills to navigate and lead in an increasingly AI-driven world. It represents a structural shift in higher education toward integrating ethical and leadership dimensions into AI training.
The certificate requires students to complete three online, asynchronous courses that focus on understanding AI’s impact, evaluating its limitations, and leading thoughtfully with the technology. Courses such as *Creatively Exploring AI* and *Calling Bullshit in the Age of AI* emphasize ethical considerations and critical thinking, with faculty highlighting the importance of keeping humans “in the driver’s seat.” UM associate professor Michael Cassens envisions expanding access to this credential beyond the Montana University System.
Looking ahead, UM aims to open the program to a broader audience outside traditional university enrollment.
Montana’s characteristic emphasis on self-reliance and leadership could align well with the program’s focus on reclaiming agency in AI interactions. For Montana businesses, this certificate might foster a workforce better prepared to critically engage with emerging technologies while maintaining ethical oversight.
