The UM Foundation launched its annual crowdfunding effort to raise funds for diverse university initiatives, including student experiences, academic programs, research, and community engagement. This campaign represents an example of collective, grassroots fundraising that works alongside traditional philanthropy.

The campaign invites contributions from UM students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, friends, and community members via an online platform, allowing gifts of any size to support projects that might otherwise lack funding. Established in 1950 as an independent nonprofit, the Foundation promotes projects ranging from student leadership and scientific discovery to healthcare education, arts, culture, accessibility, journalism, and outdoor learning. Mandy Brooks, senior director of annual giving, emphasizes that the platform helps bring ideas to life and strengthens communities across Montana.

Donors can contribute or sign up as Advocates to encourage support until the campaign ends on Nov. 13.

Montana’s dispersed population and strong community ties may make crowdfunding particularly effective here, as local networks can rally around university projects that have tangible regional impact. This model could inspire other Montana institutions seeking innovative funding avenues amid evolving philanthropic landscapes.
