The University of Montana’s expanding identity leaves humanities wanting more

Liberal arts program cuts at UM leave holes in education across the state

The University of Montana has a spreadsheet of 22 “flagged programs” which will be reviewed this year. Out of the 22 programs listed, just under half are humanities or arts-related. At the top are African American studies, Native American studies and women’s, gender and sexuality studies due to a 48% decrease in headcount over the past three years.

“If I was a faculty member in a different humanistic area of study here,” Costello Wecker said, “I would have a sense of unease.”
