The Technology Transfer Imperative

Technology transfer is an important part of the innovation life cycle. Much has been written about the importance of scientific research as the primary building block for long-term economic growth. The Gathering Storm, a report requested by Congress to provide an in-depth look at U.S. competitiveness in science and technology, and its recent follow-up report successfully articulated the challenges facing the U.S. from growing international competition and the need for sustained support of scientific research.

But in the innovation lifecycle, which stretches from basic research all the way to commercialization of new technologies, those next steps beyond basic research toward a commercial application are crucial and are the realm of technology transfer.
