Missoula Food Bank & Community Center (MFB&CC) is anticipating a reduction in a critical source of food after the USDA confirmed that $500 million in previously announced Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) purchases have been permanently canceled. TEFAP plays a vital role in ensuring families facing food insecurity have access to nutritious food by moving surplus products from farms to food banks and, ultimately, to the tables of our neighbors in need.
In 2024, MFB&CC distributed 2.81 million pounds of food to local families, including 228,290 pounds from TEFAP. Losing nearly 40% of our TEFAP funding —equivalent to $180,000 in inventory (91,000 pounds)—will mean MFB&CC will need to purchase more food than last year. In addition, with rising grocery prices and increasing financial strain on households, we are seeing a higher need than ever before and only expect demand to continue to rise.
Despite these challenges, MFB&CC remains confident in our ability to keep our shelves stocked and our doors open, serving every neighbor who access our programs. Community support will prove vital as we navigate these changes. We are thankful to be part of a community that cares deeply about the well-being of others.
“We are incredibly grateful for the continued generosity of our community,” said Amy Allison, Executive Director. “Every donation—whether food, funds, or volunteer time—makes a real difference. Together, we can ensure no one in Missoula goes hungry.”
MFB&CC is calling on the community to help bridge this gap. Donations of food and funds can be made at the food bank or online. Every contribution helps ensure that families in Missoula have access to the food they need.
“Without this federal support, the food bank will need the public’s support more than ever in ensuring everyone has access to nutritious food when they need it,” emphasized Allison.
