Stimulus money to help expand broadband in Montana’s rural areas
Montana’s many rural communities could receive over the next few years millions of dollars in stimulus money intended to spread high-speed Internet to communities on the wrong side of the digital divide.
No certain numbers are available about how many areas lack broadband access statewide, but examples of what a fleet connection to the World Wide Web can do for an isolated rural business are not hard to find.
In Harlowton, where businesses used to connect to outside markets through the railroad, a ticket-printing business, Elk River Systems Inc. http://matr.net/click.php?id=356&url=http://www.elkriversystems.com/ , now reaches to a worldwide customer base online. Orders are submitted through a Web site and downloaded by workers in this farming and ranching community of about 1,000. Clients may design their tickets using the company’s online templates. And customer support is provided through VoIP, or voice communication over the Internet.
